During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the countless women who have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality, justice, and opportunity in our Nation. 

  1. The first women’s history day took place in 1909, on February 28th. 
  2. International Women’s day was established as a holiday in 1911.
  3. Women’s history day became women’s history week in 1978.
  4. Women’s history month began in 1978. 
  5. Wyoming Territory was the first place to grant women the right to vote in 1869.
  6. The first female state governor was Nellie Tayloe Ross in 1924.
  7. The 19th amendment didn’t give all women the right to vote. 
  8. Women couldn’t get credit cards until 1974. 
  9. Women outlive men in almost every society.
  10. At the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, women could only compete in figure skating.
  11. Kamala Harris was the first woman vice president as of 2021. 
  12. Women make up 16 percent of active-duty military members. 
  13. Women make up 27 percent of Congress.
