CODA

On August 13, 2021, the film CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), directed by Sian Heder, was released. It follows Ruby Rossi, a 17-year-old girl who is the only hearing person in a deaf household. Ruby works mornings before school in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to assist her parents and brother keep their fishing business afloat. Ruby discovers her passion for singing when she joins her high school chorus. Ruby finds herself stuck between aiding the family business or attending Berklee College of Music to follow her passion for singing. The film gave me a look into what it is like to be deaf in a hearing-impaired environment. Although some may claim that CODA mainly concentrates on children of deaf adults, thus the name, I believe that CODA is only a fraction of the film’s overall goal. CODA was one of my first and favorite films that I have seen that features deaf representations. It depicted the ups and downs of growing up in a deaf home. Seeing how isolated deaf individuals feel from society was eye-opening. It is encouraging to see deaf people represented in the film industry.
