The long awaited and vastly different live-action remake, Mulan, has just been released onto Disney’s online streaming platform, Disney+. This live-action movie features a more “accurate” take in Disney’s 2020 version of Mulan. Instead of the fun and childish cartoon, the new movie features more action and a new version, in which Mulan has powers. Contrary to the 1998 original film, there is no Mushu, no Li Shang, and none of the catchy songs that appeared in the original. This live-action remake focuses more on the story of Mulan herself as well as fits to society’s modern standard, cutting out a lot of the things critics found problematic in the original film.
This film isn’t cheap. On top of Disney’s $7 per month or $70 per year’s price, this movie is $30 to stream. Perhaps the price is due to Disney’s need for money, considering the theaters are closed, or perhaps it’s because viewers want their favorite characters– like Mushu. Many critics are claiming that without the comedic relief, fun singing, and developed characters, this movie isn’t worth the $30 price tag.
