An officer involved shooting in Wisconsin has sparked nationwide protests and has resulted in several deaths.

On August 23, 2020 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jacob Blake was shot 7 times in front of his children. Jacob had warrants for domestic violence cases and was at his ex- girlfriend’s apartment without her permission. The police had been called to remove Jacob, however Jacob resisted. Reports stated that Blake told officers that he possessed a knife then proceeded to walk around the car to the drivers side. Later, investigators found the knife on the driver’s side floorboard.

Many citizens across the nation believe that this officer’s use of force was not necessary in this situation, resulting in numerous protests. Some have resulted in vandalism and looting and so far two have been killed.

Protesters have begun to ask questions related to law enforcement’s use of force policy. There are several steps police officers are taught to use whenever possible before using lethal force. Starting with verbal commands, empty handed combat techniques and if necessary tools such as baton or pepper spray. A taser was used on Blake but investigators stated that it was not effective. What technique the officer uses it is up to him/her based on their training, their agency policy, and what they believe would be the most effective in a given situation.  Generally, if Blake had a knife in his possession or was reaching for one, this officer’s use of force would be considered justified by most agencies. It has, however, not yet been confirmed by Kenosha PD whether this is what happened with regard to Blake’s shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
