A Tulare tradition of decorating a Christmas tree downtown has recently come under fire by the residents. The Redwood tree was dressed with lights on December 2 to prepare for a parade, but locals have some concerns. Many believe that the decoration is tacky and embarrassing with its patchy, netted lighting. Directors of the project let it be known that the tree cost around $1200, and that money comes directly from the community. Now the citizens are wondering if their money was well spent. The downtown association’s director, John Harman, informed that the light nets were chosen out of cost convenience after residents complained about last year’s lack of lights. They hoped to provide more light for less money, but he admits that it could look better. Not only is the tree an eyesore, but it is also meant to bring people out to the shops and such. Business owners fear that this year’s design could have a negative effect on traffic. However, they remain good sports when it comes to the Christmas fail; some of the owners have already planned to contribute to next year’s tree.
