Heartbreaking and tough season, but promising future for boys basketball.

This season was not an easy one for the boys basketball team. The wins were limited, and the losses were frustrating, and at times it felt like nothing came easily, only finishing the season with 4 wins and 25 losses.

One of the most notable aspects about this season is the opportunities given to younger players. Several freshmen were given the opportunities to play this season, and even earn starting roles, showing the coaching staff’s confidence in their abilities. One of the most efficient contributors was freshmen center Jacob Rivas, leading the team in rebounds per game.

When asked about the season, Jacob shared: “It was very shocking to me that I started as a freshman, but it was one of the best and hardest seasons of my life. Varsity is a different level of basketball and I did not think I was ready for it but my teammates helped me get through it. I am looking forward to playing with the same guys and getting better at the sport, and to be playing with my fellow freshmen for the next 3 years.”

Competing at the varsity level as underclassmen is a challenge, but it also provides valuable experience that can shape the future of the program.

While the departure of all the seniors will be felt, the experience gained by underclassmen playing together this season could strengthen team chemistry heading into next year.

Along with underclassmen earning increased varsity minutes, several juniors also took on a greater responsibility this season, particularly guard Jason Meza, guard Jordan Calaramo, and forward Cody Fry, who eventually earned the role to be team’s captain.

Reflecting on the season Jason Meza had to say: “With those opportunities we got to play together with younger players, I believe it helped build our chemistry. I look forward to playing with the same teammates because we know each other very well, and I hope it will help us win in the upcoming seasons.”

While the season comes to a close, the contributions of the senior class will not be forgotten. Senior Blake Rivas earned recognition as team’s most valuable player, and senior Randy Flores earned coaches award as the best teammate, closing out their high school careers with well-earned individual honors. With younger players gaining experience and leadership roles continuing to develop, the foundation has been set for the seasons ahead.
